This historic neighborhood is on the south side of Chicago and borders the banks of Lake Michigan. Homes in Bronzeville are generally either small homes that are spaced against one another or midsize apartment buildings. Both have small front yards that are often fenced but have wide dividers between sidewalk and road, so whether or not your dog will have plenty of space to walk at your side will depend on your comfort zone.

There are lots of alternate paths where you can get away from the tight quarters of city walking in Bronzeville. The area around Alpine Square offers lots of green spaces where you and your dog can play a game of fetch or frisbee. There are also several charming regional parks within Bronzeville, like State Way and Armstrong Parks, which both harbor a few recreational areas, but also allow for some walks along trails and in different sized fields, none of which are particularly challenging to navigate.

Walking through most of Bronzeville feels relatively tight, with homes or apartment buildings that often take up the majority of the space. Thankfully, there are lots of open, grassy areas throughout Bronzeville.

Just across the border of Bronzeville, Washington Park offers lovely walking trails among intermittent tree cover for you and your dog to explore. This area is lush and grassy, and you and your dog will love strolling down the beautiful paths underneath cool shade which is fantastic on those warmer days. This park also encompasses the lovely Washington Lagoon, which will provide you and your dog the opportunity to explore a natural shoreline and see all kinds of interesting wildlife. Bynum Island is a great place for you to travel with your pup as well. This combination of accessible areas makes Bronzeville a nice central location between them. No matter what type of activity you and he enjoy, there are plenty of options.

Bronzeville is near to several natural areas where you can explore some wilder environments outside of the neighborhood itself. Just across the border, Washington Park provides a lovely place to experience the winding trails and open areas. While much of this park is a cricket field, there are plenty of places around the field for you to enjoy being with your dog. Just be sure not to wander into places where dogs are not allowed.

One of the more interesting areas of this park to explore is the habitat around Washington Lagoon. The shoreline around the lagoon, and especially around Bynum Island, will be a favorite habitat for all kinds of wildlife. While most of this park is well-maintained and the grass is cut short, the water feature does provide a drinking source for city wildlife which may offer you some opportunities to catch a glimpse of a stray turtle or long-legged fishing bird. Either way, you'll be content with these escapes from the neighborhood streets.
