Canarsie is a small, mostly residential neighborhood in South Brooklyn New York, situated on Jamaica Bay. Most of what you will find are middle-class homes in this neighborhood, but being situated off of the bay means that you will also find plenty of places to take your favorite four-legged friend for a walk. You and your pooch can enjoy the sea breezes as you walk the streets and parks of Canarsie or wander down to the pier to enjoy the breeze on a hot summer day.
Finding medical care and your dog's favorite toys is not a problem here. There are several vets and pet stores along the outskirts of this community some even within walking distance if you want to take Fido to visit his favorite pet store in person. Like most neighborhoods in New York, you will find a smattering of different restaurants and other businesses conveniently located along your walking routes. One of the best attractions of this neighborhood are the parks and waterside areas that are perfect for walking your dog or enjoying a hot summer day. Canarsie Park and Canarsie Pier offer plenty of places to walk on and off the beaten track and both are just walking distance from most of the surrounding neighborhood.
Weather is typical of the northeast, having some extremes that may not be ideal for walking. Snow and cold temperatures in the winter and hot and humid conditions in the summer are all a part of the climate, but there are many beautiful days that are perfect for getting your pooch out for a walk.
Canarsie is mostly residential, so this does mean that you will be doing a lot of walking on the hard surfaces of the city sidewalks unless you decide to drive to the park or pier before you go walking. Once you get to the parks you will find trails, sand, and grass for your dog to sink his feet into. The terrain is flat regardless of where you head in the neighborhood so the walking is easy for all canine companions, even those in less than stellar shape or who are getting on in years. The area does have sidewalks in most if not all the neighborhoods so there are no worries about having to walk on the side of roadways. Do keep in mind, however, that the center part of the neighborhood lacks public green spaces. If greenways are high on your priority list, you will want to find the shortest route to the nearest park. There are also sandy areas and water for your beloved pet to play in, so if your dog is part duck they will love a trip down to the bay.
The central neighborhood itself is approximately three square miles and at its center, it has little in the way of public greenways suitable for taking your dog. This is more than made up for though, by the eastern and southern borders of this community where there are extensive greenways along the Fresh Creek Water Way and Jamaica Bay. Not only will you find trails and grass for you dog to sniff and do his business on, but along the greenways there is water and sand that will delight your dog as much as the grass. Trees line some of these areas making them a great choice for hot summer days when you and your dog may want to find some shade for cooling off. Fresh Creek Park just outside of Canarsie to the east is also a 42-acre salt marsh and refuge that offers a tranquil place to experience a bit of untamed Brooklyn and enjoy the outdoors.
