Co-op City is a beautiful little neighborhood on the shores of a finger of the Hampstead Bay across from extensive wetlands. This is the largest cooperative housing development in the world.The pre-planned communities of this neighborhood are laid out in a way that allows for very comfortable walking and plenty of space away from vehicle traffic. Near the center of the community is the North Bronx Educational Park, with large expanses of grass and some shrubbery where your dog will love to explore and run around. Plenty of grassy areas throughout this community will allow you to feel free to let your dog run on a loose leash most of the time.
If you are looking for a more natural experience, look no further than the Givans Creek Woods. This lovely little patch of wilderness on the corner of Co-op City will allow you to wander through the forest and give your dog a break from the well-manicured terrain of Co-op City.

For more diverse terrain and hiking, head towards the Givans Creek Woods, where you and your dog can enjoy the natural wilderness for a welcome change over the well-maintained yards of Co-op City. There is no doubt that one of the most beautiful walks of Co-op City is along the rocky shoreline from where you can clearly see the majestic wetland landscape in front of you.
Co-op City is laid out in such a way that you may feel like you are at a park all the time that you are in this beautiful area. Lots of paths wander through the well-maintained spaces with intermittent shrubbery and forested areas at the perimeters to soften the sharp line of the tall apartment building. Givans Creek Woods provides a lovely place for you to hike with your dog away from the typical city streets. You also have a good chance of seeing some of New York's regular wildlife as well as migratory birds in this rare patch of forest.
For a really beautiful hiking experience with your dog, head towards the water and hike along the natural shoreline of Co-op City. Plenty of trees along this rocky shoreline will make you feel like you are in a natural environment, while the view across the water towards the natural wetlands provides not only a beautiful perspective to look at but also lots of fascinating wildlife, especially migratory birds that you can often see in the air over the wetlands.
