Harbour Point Estates is a mobile home community in Chicago’s Hegewisch neighborhood. This community is located on the far southeast end of Chicago within proximity to Lake Michigan. There are about 300 mobile homes in this little-known community. The property management on site offers some services that can be accessed on foot, however, the community is surrounded by natural spaces and other residential communities and access to services and shops requires a trip by vehicle.

The surrounding residential area is walkable and some of the more severe Chicago temperatures that would hamper walking may be mitigated by nearby Lake Michigan. Winters can still be cold with sub-zero temperatures and summers are hot. Although the lake mitigates these extremes, it also provides humidity and rain is common in winter and spring. Be prepared when walking your dog to have warm outerwear to protect from the elements. You may also consider doggy boots to protect sensitive feet.

This secluded, mobile home park does not have any through roads and traffic mostly consists of local residents. Wolf Lake is located on the east and the community is surrounded by natural areas. Many residents experience visits from wildlife such as deer, coyotes, and raccoons. The area is flat and much of the area is currently unoccupied, providing open, landscaped areas.

Many properties in Harbour Point Estates have well-maintained lawns and many large trees and gardens can be found in the community. Although streets only have local traffic, there are no separate sidewalks in the community.  If you are walking your dog on roadways, keep him leashed, close to you, and remember pedestrians should walk facing oncoming traffic. The terrain is flat, however, natural areas and unoccupied sites may have rougher terrain. Although you will not need to climb any steep inclines while walking your dog in the neighborhood, proper footwear is still recommended.

There are trails in the area along the shoreline for people to access the lake and nature trails in the area.

The William W. Powers Recreation Area and Wolf Lake Park are located to the north of Harbour Point. This vast natural area contains 580 acres, including the 419-acre Wolf Lake. This area is popular with anglers and sports fishers. There are trails in the park and you should keep your dog leashed when exploring so your dog does not chase local critters that make this natural area their home. Not only will you disturb the local fauna but you could lose your dog. Remember to be courteous to other pedestrians while walking along the trails.
