This residential neighborhood is located just a short drive east of Downtown Los Angeles. Centrally located, Wellington Heights is handy to nearby shops and services. There are several schools for area residents and their school-age children. Many residents enjoy walking to local schools with their children and their dogs. There are pet stores, groomers and veterinarians in adjacent communities for local pet owners to access when required, but they are not located within walking distance in the community. Other services along East 3rd Street, such as several chain restaurants, convenience stores, and gas stations can be accessed by some residents on foot, although traffic in the area can be hazardous and if you are taking your dog you will want to ensure he is leashed and used to noise and traffic--and prepared to walk on hot pavement. Having doggy boots to protect your pup's paws is advisable when traveling on foot in the Los Angeles area, as pavement can become very hot on sunny summer days, with temperatures scoring above 80 degrees Fahrenheit on most days.

Wellington Heights has flat terrain and a straight grid street layout, making navigation around the area relatively easy. There is, however, a busy freeway running through the community, dividing the neighborhood, and it can be hazardous to cross for pedestrians and their pets. There are a few vehicle overpasses with sidewalks and a few dedicated overhead pedestrian crossings for this freeway. Be sure to plan your route accordingly, if you have to cross this busy artery.

Wellington Heights features mostly single-family dwellings, with some walk-up apartments and condominiums. This centrally located neighborhood is well established, and roadways have pedestrian sidewalks for you to walk safely with your dog on a leash. Some residences have traditionally landscaped yards, however, in this hot, dry, climate, natural landscaping, patios, and semi-arid-friendly landscaping are also common. This means shade along roadways from mature trees is inconsistent. If you are taking a long walk in the area with your dog, take water for both of you, and plan your route with shady breaks.

Greenways in the Wellington Height district are somewhat limited, although there are schools that offer sports fields and playgrounds, which are distributed throughout this residential neighborhood. There are also two large cemeteries bordering the Wellington Heights community. Walks along the borders of these well manicured green spaces, on sidewalks adjacent to the cemetery, provides a greenway experience for dogs and pedestrians in the area to enjoy some scenery. Just east of the community, the Eugene A. Obregon Park, a 7-acre park with trails, grassy areas, and mature trees is available, that you can enjoy with your dog on-leash.  There are also baseball fields, a basketball court, playgrounds and picnic spaces. Please remember to be respectful of other park users and clean up after your dog.

If you travel north of Wellington Heights by vehicle you can access several large parks and wilderness areas, with long elevated trails for those who want to enjoy scenic views of the Los Angeles area.
