Polo Grounds is a small, residential community located in Bakersfield, California. Most of this small neighborhood is made of midsize, stand-alone, single-family homes, although there is a small apartment complex located in the north side of this neighborhood. There are very few commercial spaces, but those that do exist include a storage facility, a few local restaurants, a few chain restaurants and coffee shops, a tractor supply store, a candy store, a fire station, and an urgent care clinic. Unfortunately, there are no pet-related businesses in this neighborhood, however, there is an animal hospital located almost immediately to the south of the area and a few pet spas and salons to the east of the neighborhood.

Like much of California that's not located on the coast, Bakersfield and Polo Grounds has a desert climate. Summers are long and dry with plenty of heat and sunshine. The winters are slightly cooler with only a slightly higher chance for rainfall.

Polo Grounds, as a residential community, is largely artificial terrain. The community is comprised of single-family homes with manicured lawns and well-maintained sidewalks. Unfortunately, what few trees are in Polo Grounds are located on private property and provide little shade on the sidewalks or streets. This means you will want to be especially careful with your pup's sensitive paw pads during the long, hot summers. As a precaution, special booties may be purchased to help protect your dog's feet from hot concrete on their daily walks.

Additionally, Polo Grounds is quite flat with few inclines or changes in elevation, so at least you and your pup won't be battling hills on top of that desert heat!

The boundaries of Polo Grounds include Hageman Road to the north, Calloway Drive to the east, Rosedale Highway to the south, and Jewetta Avenue to the west. Verdugo Lane and Meacham Road are the major roadways that run through Polo Grounds.

Unfortunately, there are no greenways located in Polo Grounds. This largely residential neighborhood does not have a park or community garden. However, immediately to the west of the neighborhood, dog walkers will find North Rosedale Park which is adjacent to the local elementary school. North Rosedale Park has several sports facilities and fields, public restrooms, a picnic area, a playground, and a general recreation area. There is no off-leash area in this park but it will still make for a good stop if you and your pup are looking for some green.

Other parks within the surrounding areas of Polo Grounds include Polo Park, Riverlakes Ranch Park, Liberty Park, and Greenacres Park and Community Center. These generally have playgrounds and some recreational areas but do not have nature trails or dog-specific areas. Almost three miles northeast, you will find the City of Bakersfield Dog Park, an off-leash area for your pup to run and socialize with other local dogs!
