This residential area is mixed with local services, shops, and eateries, which makes for a variety of buildings and architecture.  Central San Pedro is a well developed neighborhood, with plenty of buildings, parking lots, and roadways, but there is plenty of mature landscaping, both natural and cultivated The area is predominately flat with sidewalks making for easy, safe walking for pedestrians and their dogs. The area can be busy with traffic from local residents, people working and doing business in the area, and tourists accessing the waterfront and associated businesses. Watch out for vehicles when crossing roadways or entering and exiting parking lots across pedestrian walkways—visitors to the area may be distracted if they are unfamiliar with the area and not aware of pedestrians and pets. There are more businesses and varied terrain on main thoroughfares and towards the harbor. The San Pedro Waterfront Red Car line operates for 1.5 miles along the waterfront and attracts tourists to the area as well as the harbor itself.

San Pedro Plaza Park features a walkway lined with trees along Harbor Boulevard, which makes a great greenway destination for walks with your dog and provides views of the local rail line and harbor. Cool breezes coming off the water make this area more tolerable for walks on hot days. There are also several school yards and recreational areas, providing open green spaces when not in use by sports teams or students. Several parks and greenspaces are located in San Pedro and Central San Pedro. The 22 Street Park is a natural area near the water, located on the south end of the community. This area features natural terrain and trails, and you can enjoy this area with your dog on-leash. Alma Park is a smaller park, but has beautiful trees and an old stone wall, grassy areas, and a playground for children. Avril Park also located in Central San Pedro features barbeques and a pond for park guests to enjoy. Meandering trails allow dogs to watch the resident ducks and geese while strolling along the pond, remember to keep your dog leashed and clean up after your pet in public parks to be respectful of other users.
