The historic University Park neighborhood, where two large university campuses are situated, is located centrally in Los Angeles, just south of the downtown area between the Santa Monica Freeway on its northern border, Washington Boulevard and Harbor Freeway to the east, Vermont Avenue to the west and Exposition park to the south. Because of its central location, many restaurants, shops, and services, including pet services, are available in the community or in adjacent and nearby areas.
There are plenty of walking destinations in the neighborhood, and the weather in University Park is sunny and warm year round, with no need to worry about a warm jacket on most days. Some rain and cooler weather can occur in winter months, but it is not common, as this area is usually quite dry, and rain will rarely hamper you and your pooches walking or hiking plans. There are several primary and secondary school in the area to serve families and recreational areas and services, including a pedestrian mall, to meet the needs of local students and area residents.
This neighborhood is typically flat, and the area is well established. There is a mix of apartments and multi-family buildings—many of which house local students—large and historic single family dwellings, schools, associated grounds, and commercial businesses and services in the area. The large university campuses have well kept grounds that are popular walking destinations. There are also some unique and beautiful historical homes, including Doherty Mansion and its south and north lawns. The schools and historical sites attract tourists and students from outside the area, and although this is predominantly a residential neighborhood, it is busy with activity from the associated schools.
University Park, true to its name, has plenty of trees and grassy areas, providing natural green spaces right in the heart of Los Angeles for locals and their pets to enjoy. Shady sidewalks and grassy areas provide welcome relief from the heat while walking on a hot day in University Park.
University Park is bordered on the south by Exposition Park. The large sports and recreation area is the home to sports facilities including basketball courts, features a rose garden, and has several walking and jogging trails woven throughout it that can be enjoyed by local pet owners.
Other local parks in the area include T. James Park and Estelle Park. Both these parks have shady spots to rest in and grass and walking trails to enjoy. Walks along college campuses and their associated grounds provide scenic views of lawns, historic buildings, large mature trees and beautiful landscaping. Dogs are not always permitted on school properties, so be sure to check current regulations for access to facility and grounds in the area.
A drive to the coast, west of University Park, will allow you to access some dog-friendly beaches and the Santa Monica Pier, where dogs are welcome if they are kept on a leash. There are also several off-leash dog parks in areas to the west of University Park, where your dog can socialize and get some freedom and exercise. Be sure to check local off leash park websites for times, rules, and regulations, to enjoy these great opportunities with your pup.
