Vermont Harbor is not a harbor as the name implies! It is, in fact, landlocked and located in South Los Angeles, California. This community is the location of the historical Vermont Square Branch Library. Primarily a residential neighborhood with several schools located in the community, there are also some commercial areas providing shops, restaurants and other services. Areas along S. Vermont Avenue and Normandie Avenue have lots of different businesses providing services to area residents and can be accessed on foot by locals. Pet services such as veterinarians, groomers, and pet shops are located in adjacent neighborhoods. The weather is sunny in Los Angeles most of the time and is cooperative for traveling on foot with your dog, who will appreciate the outing. It is almost always sunny and warm in Vermont Harbor, even in winter. In summer, temperatures can become quite hot, and you may want to plan walks with your dog for early or later in the day to avoid extreme heat.
Vermont Harbor is a well-established neighborhood, with flat terrain and a grid pattern street layout. It is comprised mainly of single-family homes, with some multifamily buildings. Many sidewalks in the area have curb strips, greenways to separate paved pedestrian walks from streets, which is nice when walking your dog to provide cooler terrain for doggy paws that do not appreciate unforgiving, hot, pavement on sidewalks. Residential areas are quieter for walking with your dog, and many contain mature, traditional, and desert-friendly trees, such as palm trees. Commercial areas on main roads can experience quite a bit of traffic. Keep your dog on-leash and watch for vehicles coming and going from parking lots and side roads in these busy areas. There is a park and historic library located here. The library is the oldest library in the Los Angeles system, and features unique architecture, providing an interesting walking destination in this predominantly residential neighborhood.
Vermont Square Park is a small urban park with barbecue pits, playground, and basketball courts, located in the center of Vermont Harbor. Dogs can enjoy the green space here on-leash. Remember to be prepared to clean up after your dog to be respectful to others. The Hoover-Gage Mini Park is also located in the southern section of Vermont Harbor and features a playground for children. Exposition Park is located on the northern border of Vermont Harbor. This park features sports grounds and recreational facilities. There are walkways in the area that residents use as a greenway for jogging with their dogs. Other parks in the area include Orchard Avenue Park and Julian C Dixon Park.
If you are willing to venture north by vehicle, you and your dog can access large wilderness and natural areas with many miles of trails in the hills and mountains north of Los Angeles. These areas feature amazing views of the city, and dogs are welcome on leash. Many off-leash dog parks in the Los Angeles area can also be accessed by vehicle from Vermont Harbor to the west and north.
