Burlingame is a neighborhood located northeast of San Diego, California's central business district. The area has many local businesses which include bars, restaurants, shops, and local stores located along Fern-30th Street which runs north to south through the community.

Local businesses catering to pet owners include the South Park Dog Wash, Woof and Purr Vet, and several local restaurants that welcome dogs on their outdoor patio seating areas. You can find these patios at Del Sur Mexican Cantina, the Daily Scoop, Station Tavern and Burgers, and Eclipse Chocolate.

San Diego has beautiful weather for pedestrians and pets with sunny, dry, warm conditions most of the year. Summer heat can be uncomfortable for long hikes with your canine companion. Take your dog for shorter walks at cooler times of the day when daytime heat is not such an issue. Winters are mild with temperatures well above freezing and there is no need to have warm outerwear.

Burlingame is located between North Park and South Park, east of Balboa Park. A commercial corridor runs north to south through the area. Switzer Canyon is located on the northwest side and Juniper Canyon is located on the east side. These areas provide rough natural terrain in the region.

Homes in the area are part of a recognized historic district and feature unique architecture representing Craftsman, Tudor Revival, Mission, Spanish Colonial, Art Deco, and California Ranch styles. There are sidewalks along streets that provide safe, separate pedestrian ways for people and pets. Many sidewalks are colored brick as opposed to pavement and make attractive walkways.

There are some gentle inclines in the developed area, especially in the northern sections, while other areas are fairly level and the natural canyon features elevations changes and steep terrain. The area is well landscaped with palm trees, flowering shrubs, and gardens on private properties that make the area pleasant for walking with your dog.

Balboa Park is located on the west side. This is a vast greenway occupying 1,200 acres with attractions like the zoo, museums, theatres, and gift shops. Not all areas of the greenway are accessible to pets, however, there are hundreds of acres with wooded areas and gardens that have walking trails, provided you keep your pup on a leash and are prepared to clean up after them. There are also three designated off-leash dog areas in the park. You have plenty of options to enjoy with your canine companion!

Juniper Canyon and Switzer Canyon feature long hiking trails to explore with your dog, right on the neighborhoods doorstep. You can enjoy hours of treks with your four-legged friend with native plants and local wildlife to discover. Keep your dog leashed in the wilderness areas and avoid residents such as rattlesnakes and coyotes that could pose a danger to your pet.
