College West is a neighborhood of San Diego, California. It is located northeast of the city's central business district, approximately a 22-minute commute for residents. There are local businesses including shops, restaurants, and services located in the commercial area south of the San Diego State University, in the neighborhood's northeast section, and along the El Cajon commercial corridor on the south.

Dog walkers in College West do not need to use winter or rain gear frequently, as winters are mild and mostly dry and rain in the spring is infrequent and not usually heavy. Summers are extremely hot, however, and precautions against heat-related illnesses need to be taken by dog owners. Make sure your dog and yourself are well hydrated and avoid overexerting yourselves or becoming overexposed in hot conditions. Walking earlier or later in the day when temperatures are cooler is a popular plan for people and their pups!

College West is bordered by El Cajon Boulevard on the south side which is a commercial thoroughfare and has heavier traffic than residential streets. The San Diego State University is located on the northeast corner of the district and is surrounded by facilities, grounds, sports venues, and commercial areas which also bring traffic flow to the region.

College West is also bordered by Collwood Boulevard on the west side, College Avenue on the east side, and Mission Valley Freeway on the north side. Natural canyons stretch into the northwest side of the community and through the south sections from the west. These canyons have steep elevation changes and natural terrain associated with them. Residential streets have some level areas, but also many hills with elevation changes that will require you and your dog to climb up and down some slopes.

Homes in the area tend to be single-family homes that are attractive and well maintained with landscaped properties.

The canyons that stretch through the residential areas of College West provide natural terrain and wilderness habitat with trails where you can walk with your dog. Be careful of steep sections, rough terrain, and local wildlife that could be hazardous to you and your canine companion.

The Ward Canyon Dog Park is a 10-minute drive to the west. This enclosed dog park has two separate areas, one for large dogs, and one for small dogs under 20 pounds that both allow for off-leash play. There is no running water in the park, so bring a water supply, especially on hot days. There is also no shade and the surface is shredded bark, so some dogs may find this hard on their paw pads.

The Mission Trails Regional Park is a 15-minute drive to the north and provides hundreds of acres of mountainous wilderness terrain and miles of hiking trails to explore with your adventurous pup.
