Bernal Heights is south of San Francisco's famous Mission District. Some consider it to be one of the best kept secrets in the city.  Known for its open and sprawling parks, the radio tower on top of Bernal Heights Summit is your sign you are in the neighborhood. Commonly agreed upon as being bordered by Cesar Chavez Street to the north, San Jose Avenue to the west, US 101 to the east, and Interstate 280 to the south, it is a great neighborhood.

Basking in the mild weather of San Francisco, you are likely to find a dog-friendly establishment or park around every corner. With easily mild temperatures in the winter and minimal rainfall year round, dog walking is a favorite pastime in San Francisco and it is one US city that is known for being dog-friendly. If there is not a clear sign, but there is an outdoor patio, chances are it's dog-friendly, so don't be afraid to ask!

The Bernal Heights neighborhood boasts a really good combination of city and green space, but there are clear divides. The parks are set apart from the neighborhood proper.  When walking in the neighborhood, you will be met with the hills San Francisco is famous for. They are no joke and define a "hilly" neighborhood. Know your canine friend well because the exertion of walking uphill effects our pups too. Treescapes are few, so walks will usually be in the direct sun. Automotive traffic will be present, so follow pedestrian traffic laws to protect yourself and your pup. Around the neighborhood, you will find mostly sidewalk experiences with some narrow streets that only allow one car to pass at a time.

A good mix of natural terrain is thrown in the neighborhood with some great parks. Bernal Heights Summit is a natural climbing experience with walking trails almost to the top where a privately owned space holds the famous radio tower.

The parks in Bernal Heights offer the much needed green spaces for the dog-friendly neighborhood. The Bernal Heights Dog Park is a 36+ acre park that sits on top of the Bernal Heights Summit. This is an off-leash park for dogs with no separation of large or small dogs. It is also not a structured, fenced-in park but rather a free roaming, trail hiking experience. Keep untrained pups on a leash!

St. Mary's Dog Play Area off of Justin Drive in Bernal Heights has been ranked as one of the best dog play parks in the city. With a double gated entrance to keep our furry friends safe, the park offers a large, manicured grass field. Lots of benches and picnic tables are available for two-legged folks. Water fountains are available to keep your furry friend hydrated. The area is not separated for large and small dogs, so keep an eye on your little pups!
