Crocker-Amazon is a large neighborhood on the south side of San Francisco. It is bordered by Southern Hills, Sunnydale, and Oceanview, and it lies adjacent to Crocker-Amazon Playground and John McLaren Park. It is a slightly more affluent community than average in the San Francisco area and it is mostly known for the upscale Victorian homes that line its winding streets. The only major thoroughfares that run through the neighborhood are near its edges which is where most of the businesses and attractions in Crocker-Amazon can be found.
San Francisco is famous for its unique climate where the temperature hardly ever escapes the 55 to 65-degree range year round. The city is located right along San Francisco Bay which causes cold winds to blow through its streets. If you decide to walk on a particularly cold and windy day, make sure you take the proper precautions for both you and your dog.
San Francisco is also known for being an unusually hilly city and Crocker-Amazon fits this description well. If you begin walking on Geneva Avenue, the northern boundary of the neighborhood, you will feel the elevation slowly climb as you continue south. Most of Crocker-Amazon is spread out over the bases of a large set of inclines which reach their highest points in the Southern Hills neighborhood just south of the Crocker-Amazon border.
Crocker-Amazon is one of the quieter neighborhoods in San Francisco, meaning you won’t have to deal with the bustling street and foot traffic of more congested areas in the city. Since it is mostly residential, it is just an area of densely populated homes that wind around the hills with a few small main drags that have businesses and restaurants. It should make for a pleasant walk no matter the time of day.
There are no major greenways or parks within the true bounds of Crocker-Amazon, but the surrounding areas have a wealth of dog walking opportunities to offer. Just to the northeast of the neighborhood is the Crocker-Amazon Playground which is much more than its name suggests. The area spans several acres and it has open grassy fields, baseball diamonds, and tennis courts. The borders of Crocker-Amazon Playground run right up against the much larger John McLaren Park.
McLaren Park is the third largest park in San Francisco. Stretching for 312 acres, it has playgrounds, picnic areas, all kinds of athletic fields and courts, an outdoor amphitheater, and a swim and play area for dogs. There are several trails that run throughout McLaren Park and it also has multiple forest patches. If you live in the Crocker-Amazon area and are looking for a place to walk your dog, McLaren Park is one of the most promising options.
