Dog walkers in Mayfair should be prepared for cold winters with some snowy conditions by having a warm coat and footwear for negotiating icy walkways in sub-freezing weather. Atlantic storm systems in fall and winter can be severe. When these weather conditions are present in the area, take shelter and postpone long walks. Summers are humid and thunderstorms are frequent occurrences. When they are occurring, wait for them to pass before heading out with your dog.
The residences in the Mayfair community consist of apartment complexes, row houses, and public housing. There is some landscaping on residential properties, and sidewalks line roads, so you don't have to share the road with vehicles. The terrain is relatively flat with only some slight inclines and no steep hills to climb. Redevelopment is occurring in the area and there is some construction and vacant lots.
Anacostia Park has greenways along the southwest side of Mayfair. Two recreation centers are located here and the Anacostia Riverside Trail winds through the park. This trail extends south to other sections and north into Kenilworth Park. The Anacostia Riverwalk is a great place for a stroll with your canine companion and features views of the river and access to sports fields and facilities.
The Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens on the northwest side of the Mayfair area is accessible to people and pets. This unique park has wooded areas, wetlands, and cultivated ponds with aquatic plants. Plenty of wildlife calls this greenway home including small mammals and many bird species attracted to the wetland environment.
The River Trail on the north side of this park is a fantastic place to walk with your pet. Bridges are provided to cross waterways and there are beautiful views of the natural greenway and the river.
