Mayfair, also known as Parkside-Mayfair, is located on the east side of the Anacostia River on the northeast side of Washington, D.C. The neighborhood has some schools, industrial facilities, and churches, but no restaurants or shops within its borders to walk to. Residents can cross the freeway and tracks at a pedestrian crossing on the northeast side to reach a commercial area with fast food eateries and shops on foot, although the neighborhood is not known for having walkable services.

Dog walkers in Mayfair should be prepared for cold winters with some snowy conditions by having a warm coat and footwear for negotiating icy walkways in sub-freezing weather. Atlantic storm systems in fall and winter can be severe. When these weather conditions are present in the area, take shelter and postpone long walks. Summers are humid and thunderstorms are frequent occurrences. When they are occurring, wait for them to pass before heading out with your dog.

There are train tracks along Anacostia Avenue and along Benning Road which is a major thoroughfare running east-west through the neighborhood. These sections of the neighborhood and the industrial areas present in the district are not pedestrian-friendly, so use caution when walking your dog near these roads. A power station is also located here and impedes pedestrian traffic.

The residences in the Mayfair community consist of apartment complexes, row houses, and public housing. There is some landscaping on residential properties, and sidewalks line roads, so you don't have to share the road with vehicles. The terrain is relatively flat with only some slight inclines and no steep hills to climb. Redevelopment is occurring in the area and there is some construction and vacant lots.
