Near Northeast is a mixed-use neighborhood located just northeast of the Washington, D.C. core. This neighborhood is highly walkable with lots of businesses, restaurants, shops, and services that are well distributed throughout it and near residential buildings. The area contains an arts and entertainment district with theaters, nightclubs, bars, and unique eateries. There is also plenty of shopping in the region, including a large chain pet store where pet owners can pick up supplies for their furry friends.

Near Northeast residents that enjoy walking their dogs throughout the year are in for some chilly conditions in winter months with sub-freezing temperatures and light snow. A warm jacket and footwear with good traction will allow you to get outside with your pet on most winter days. Avoid overexertion in humid summer months and make sure you and your dog stay well hydrated. You should also check forecasts for thunderstorms in the region as they often have high winds and heavy rain.

This developed area has lots of buildings with unique historic architecture and some landscaping, but large shade trees are not as common in this neighborhood as in other districts nearby.

Near the train tracks, you and your pet can access the Metropolitan Branch Trail. This trail runs for 8 miles and is asphalt surfaced, running along the tracks through a mostly urban environment. However, it does provide a safe, separate pedestrian way in the neighborhood and leashed dogs can use the trail.

If you want some off-leash fun, check out the Kingsman Field Dog Park which is located several blocks to the east of the Near Northeast neighborhood. This park is open from 7AM to 10PM, seven days a week, and provides waste bags and a water fountain for your thirsty pup. There are two separate enclosed areas, one for large, active dogs and one for small, senior, and shy pups.
