The northeast side of Washington, D.C. is home to the mostly residential neighborhood of North Michigan Park. The neighborhood is home to schools, churches, and a recreation center with a hospital located within walking distance in the adjacent neighborhood. There is a commercial area on the northern section of the community with fast food, convenience stores, and other services as well as a dollar store and other shops on Eastern Avenue. These small commercial areas are within walking distance for residents of North Michigan Park.

The walkability of the area can be impacted by inclement weather. Summer thunderstorms should be avoided as wind and rain can be dangerous to exposed pedestrians. Storm systems from the Atlantic can also create severe weather. Winters are cold with sub-freezing temperatures and some snow. Usually, adequate warm coats and footwear will allow you to continue walking your dog daily, even in winter months. When occasional blizzards occur, you may want to postpone long outings.

North Michigan Park is bordered by Fort Circle Park on the north side, Eastern Avenue and the Maryland border on the east side, South Dakota Avenue on the west side, and Shepherd Street on the south side. There is metro line train track in the region. While these tracks run underground in some areas, they are above ground in other areas and should only be crossed at designated crossings with your pet.

There is a large wooded area near the recreation center that runs through the neighborhood, creating a beautiful green space. The neighborhood has separate pedestrian sidewalks along residential streets which are lined with trees and grass berms, creating ideal walking venues for you and your pet.

Most of the region is relatively level with only some gentle inclines that are not difficult for you and your dog to climb up and down. Homes are generally single-family detached and semi-detached dwellings on well landscaped and maintained properties.

There is a Fort Circle Park greenway on North Michigan Park’s north side. This open and treed natural area is located at the site of a former civil war earthworks defense area. The Barnard Hill Park is located on the south side of the neighborhood. This park has a trail for you to stroll with your dog through open and wooded terrain along a ridge. There are picnic tables in the park where you can take a break and a ball diamond on the southside.

A wooded area near the recreation center also provides natural wooded areas for local hikes with your pup. A short walk from North Michigan Park is the larger Fort Totten Park, which is situated on elevated ground with excellent walking trails and beautiful trees and lawns.

Your dog should remain leashed in these parks and on trails and you should bring supplies to clean up after them.
