The houses in Barrs sit between US-1 and the Indian River North in an area of town that tends to be a bit noisy due to the proximity of the highway. This intersection of roadways is also known as North Ridgewood Avenue and the North Dixie Freeway. No matter what name you decide to call it by, it is a major thoroughfare that starts far to the north in Fort Kent, Maine and goes all the way down the east coast until it ends on Key West.

US-1 is also home to a variety of restaurants, shops, businesses, and other amenities along the way. This includes places to stock up on dog food and treats for your furry friend. From here, you can look out over the Spruce Creek Preserve. The view is spectacular and well worth getting up for early inthe morning, also making an excellent time of day to go for walks with your dog as traffic is minimal.

Being this close to US-1, you will be dealing with a lot of traffic if you choose to take your dog for strolls on the sidewalks running alongside it. At certain times of the day, like morning and evening rush hours, the traffic on the highway can be very heavy, which might not make it the best place to be taking your dog. However, once you move back and away from the highway, things do tend to quiet down enough for the two of you to be able to go for walks during the day.

Most of the residential streets are heavily shaded but have no sidewalks. While the shade is cool and makes your walks a little more pleasant, you will need to keep a close eye out for traffic.

The ground is pretty flat which means having to walk further in order to achieve the same results you would receive if you had hills to hike up and down.

Directly on the other side of the Indian River North is the Mosquito Lagoon Aquatic Preserve. The preserve is one vast section of the Indian River Lagoon network and home to a resident pod of dolphins. The best way to explore the preserve is by boat, but there are plenty of islands for the two of you to get out on and stretch your legs.

If you take the South Causeway, it will take you to the beach in under ten minutes. The beach offers miles of dry and wet sand to walk on. The dry stuff pulls at your feet and your dog's paws and makes walking challenging. It is a good way to walk off the pounds on your way out and then you can use the wet sand for a far gentler walk on the return journey. Then, of course, there is the water which both of you can use to cool off in.
