Hart in Riverside Park is a small neighborhood on Wayne Avenue near the waterways that lead into Indian River North. While the homes are in a quiet area, living here puts you very close to US Highway 1, a bustling 4-lane highway filled with businesses, restaurants, and much more. US-1 not only runs through New Smyrna Beach, but all the way from Key West in the south to Fort Kent in Maine, making it the longest north-south highway in the US.

The highway will also take you to many of the essential amenities such as grocery stores, pet supply stores, and so forth. In fact, you can be anywhere in town from your home in minutes. The beach is only ten minutes away over the North Causeway, making it the perfect place to take your dog for walks for something a little different beyond the usual pavement to walk on.

On a typical day, the area is relatively quiet, but you should be aware that there is a bar on the same road that may attract a little noise and perhaps not the best crowds at night. If you must walk your dog at night, you should stay away from the bar and walk with a friend or another family member for your safety.

A good place to go walking during the day is the grass running between Riverside Drive and the waterways. This is a nice wide swath of grassy terrain and runs for a long way along the waterway down to Riverside Park where you can enjoy the walking paths and the large areas of open fields. The park also offers public boat docking and access to the Indian River North. Walking this route is a great way to log in your daily miles and keep both you and your dog active and healthy.

The Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve spans over 1,630 acres of forests and swamps. The preserve offers miles of trails for the two of you to walk on, but be aware that you will be sharing the space with other dog walkers and hikers. There may be times when you need to keep your dog on a short leash for safety.

Next up, the beach is only a ten-minute drive to the east. Here, you and your dog can go for long walks in the soft sand where your feet and your dog's paws will have a tough time with every step. This makes walking here very challenging, but it will help build leg muscles and stamina. The good news is that you can make the return trip in the wet sand near the surf. It is much easier to walk in and you have the advantage of being able to stop and go for a swim in the waves to cool off!
