Sitting on the north side of Memorial Park Lake is the community of Beacon Woods. The houses here are modest and ranch-style. The neighborhood itself is very family oriented with lots of shade trees and just enough room between the homes to ensure at least some modicum of privacy. Beacon Woods is a moderately affluent area with several homes sporting in-ground swimming pools and all the streets have sidewalks.

From your home here, you can walk to Bealls, Ross, and Walgreens. You can also take your dog down to the Memorial Park Lake and enjoy the walking path running around it. At the intersection of Dunlawton Avenue and South Nova Road in the Dunlawton Square shopping center, you will find a Publix Supermarket where you can fill your pantry and find plenty of dog food for the furry member of the family. Dunlawton is also the main route to the I-95 interchange for those who commute out of town.

Like most family neighborhoods in any town, Beacon Woods is a working-class community. For those who are out walking their dogs, this means a moderate amount of traffic during most of the day with an hour of craziness during the morning and evening rush hours.

You might think this would make it impossible to find a quiet time of the day to take your pup out for their daily walk. This is not so! In fact, the best time of day to avoid the traffic is also the best time of day to take your dog out for a walk. This time is early in the morning before the rest of the world comes to life. It might be hard getting up this early to start with, but after a few days with no traffic, no kids, and cool, comfortable temperatures, you might start wondering why you hadn't been doing this all along.

The only green space close enough for you and your dog to walk to is Memorial Park where there is a walking path around the lake. It's a pleasant, relaxing walk, perfect for a cool summer morning as the temperature just starts to climb and the sun peeks its head above the horizon.

Less than a five-minute drive to the north is Dunlawton Sugar Mill Gardens. Here, you will find the ruins of the 19th Century plantation and sugar mill. Today, the area is home to fabulous floral gardens, crazy dinosaur statues, and several nature trails.

If you want to get the most bang for your buck, you can drive your family and pooch out to the beach, park your car in the sand, and have some great family time together! The beach is a great place to take long relaxing walks with your dog along the edge of the surf while you look for seashells and sand dollars together.
