Marycrest is a small neighborhood on Chicago’s south side. It is located adjacent to Ashburn and Parkview, with the Chicago Lawn area just a couple of miles to the north. Most of the neighborhood is very residential and rows of houses line the streets with typically suburban lawns and garages. In the southeast corner of Marycrest, there is a small shopping center called Westport Commons which has multiple chain restaurants, a car wash, and other small businesses for you to explore during your daily outing.

Chicago is beautiful for walking a dog in the summer, but the winter is when it earns its reputation as the 'Windy City.' Biting gusts of wind blow off of Lake Michigan in the colder months, making it a tough place to walk a dog at certain times. If you do walk in the winter, make sure to take the proper precautions for you and your dog.

The terrain in Marycrest is similar to that of much of Chicago: flat, with few steep hills, inclines, or dramatic changes in elevation. Unlike some sections in the northern part of the city, which have a few small shifts in elevation, Marycrest and most of the south side are some of the flattest parts of the city. The streets all have sidewalks and they are mostly lined with trees and a few green areas.

Marycrest is a quieter section of town and there isn’t likely to be any suffocating foot or street traffic at any time of day. The neighborhood has no major thoroughfares within its borders, but S. Kedzie Avenue runs parallel to Marycrest on the east side and the road becomes very busy during rush hour. The terrain within the neighborhood is perfect for walking a dog either on the street or in the main green area on its south side.

There are no real parks or greenways within the neighborhood of Marycrest because it is almost exclusively a subdivision. The green space on the south side of the neighborhood is a conjoined section of Evergreen Cemetary which continues on the other side of W 87th Street. However, there are nearby options for greenways and parks if you decide to take your dog outside of Marycrest.

Hayes Park lies just a few blocks to the northeast of Marycrest. It is a 20-acre park with an indoor facility that has a gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, fitness center, and multi-purpose room. The large field in Hayes Park has multiple baseball fields and a walkway that loops around the central green space. The Dan Ryan Woods lay just east of Hayes Park and they offer a much larger expanse of parks and greenways to explore than those located in the general Marycrest area.
