Pullman sits on the south side of Chicago and is billed as being the first industrial planned community in the nation. The history of this community is so significant in our country's history that President Obama named the entire district a U.S. National Monument. Known for its historic row houses and buildings related to the Pullman Palace Car Company, you can find families who have been here for many generations. The neighborly atmosphere makes taking your dog out for a walk a fun experience, as you never know who you might run into. Sidewalks are plentiful along with several places to shop and eat. To the east of the community sits Lake Calumet along with Calumet West Shore and Gull Island. Pullman is definitely a community you can feel safe in while out walking your pooch. The weather here is much like the rest of the city, hot and humid in the summer and bitter cold in the winter.

Like most of the Greater Chicago area, the terrain in Pullman is, for all intents and purposes, as flat as it gets. The entire area is one massive flat plain that, over the course of time, has grown into the city it is today. Pullman may not offer much in the way of challenging hills to hike up and down but, on the other hand, the streets all have sidewalks, most of which are lined with small patches of grass for your pup to pee on and plenty of shady trees to help keep you cool on long, summer walks. One of the most significant challenges is getting to McKinley Park as you have to go under I-94 to get there, but once you arrive, there is plenty of room to play. If you plan to walk in the winter, be sure you have the proper coat and booties for your dog to keep him from getting frostbite.

The entire community of Pullman seems to be focused on being a green space in the middle of an urban jungle. Most of the residential streets are lined with grassy lanes and trees with a few small parks mixed in. The area is split into North Pullman and Pullman/Arcade Row with industry and large-scale shopping in the center to provide some nice scenic strolls.

The two major parks besides Lake Calumet are Arcade Park and Community Garden in the Arcade Row areas and Gately Park up in North Pullman. But, there are plenty of small parks and open spaces for you to take your pup out so that he can get in his fair share of exercise. Like most parks, you will need to keep your dog on a leash and of course be sure you clean up after him in order to keep the park clean and comfortable for everyone and their pets.
