South Deering is on Chicago's south side and is part of the largest of the community areas in the city. This area is mostly industrial, with South Deering being one of several neighborhoods clustered around the northeast corner.  South Deering has historically been the home of factory workers, but as factories have vanished from the area, the population has become more diverse.

Lake Calhoun takes up a large portion of the neighborhood, encompassing both open water and wetland areas. Homes in South Deering are single-family with small, primarily fenced yards. There is a good divider between sidewalk and street, and streets are not very heavily trafficked, so you will feel comfortable walking your dog on a loose leash throughout most of the area. Plenty of mature trees will keep you cool even on hot Chicago days. Across the Calumet River, the Uncle Paws Grooming Salon can have your dog looking good when he needs a bath.

South Deering is a primarily flat neighborhood with long, straight streets. It is bordered by the Van Vlissingen Prairie natural areas that extend for many miles. Big Marsh Park is kitty-corner to South Deering and is very easy to access by crossing the railroad tracks carefully.

Although walking through South Deering is not at all unpleasant, you will doubtless be drawn to the natural areas around you. Van Vlissingen Prairie provides miles of natural hiking. This park provides an extremely wide range of natural habitat for you and your dog to explore, from thick forest that will encourage your dog to  put her nose to the test seeking out hidden wildlife, to prairie that will teach your dog to pick her footing around shrubbery, and wetlands where your dog can test her paws on marshy terrain. You can walk or bike throughout most of these park areas and can easily follow the neighborhood streets back home.

South Deering is wealthy in wild areas. The wide variety of natural landscape for your dog and you to explore in this area will inspire you both to continue forward the whole way. You won't be able to stay satisfied with neighborhood walks for long with so much interesting nature around you.

If you cross the railroad, you will find even more fascinating places. You can cross where the railroad narrows by the marsh, or go up through Trumbull Park and cross on East 103rd Street. There is a sidewalk along the highway here, but it isn't wide, so you will need to exercise a bit of caution.

Once across, you can head towards the Railroad Marsh or head down Stony Island Avenue to the Arborside Marsh Pond and Lake Calumet, as well as Big Marsh Park. Whether you want to stay on the trail or wander off, you and your dog will have a great experience and see all kinds of fascinating wildlife.
