West Rogers Park, also known as West Ridge, is a community of Victorian and Georgian homes, condos, and a wide variety of apartment buildings. It is a largely working-to-middle-class community. The area is very diverse and includes a large Indian, Pakistani, and Jewish population. Throughout the neighborhood, you will find a wonderful selection of stores, delis, and restaurants serving up many amazing dishes. For dog lovers, there are several pet stores in the area. There are several dog-friendly parks in the community as well and plenty of wide sidewalks for you and your pup to walk along.

The weather here spends weeks below freezing in the winter with up to 38 inches or more of snow each year. Summers, on the other hand, stay in the low 80s with rain showers to help keep everything nice and green. You and your pup can enjoy many days of amazing weather to take your daily strolls in.

Like most of Chicago, the terrain here is a blend of flat and level. It is nothing very remarkable to look at and certainly nothing to get excited about when it comes to going out for walks. But, of course, if you put your imagination to work, you can take boring sidewalks and turn them into a challenge once you give your pup's paws time to toughen up and get used to walking on pavement.

Just because you have to start out slow doesn't mean your walks have to stay that way. In fact, when faced with this type of terrain, the only way to make it more challenging is to go for distance and speed. Work your way up to covering more blocks at first and then start working towards being able to jog around them. This way, both of you will still get in plenty of healthy exercise on a daily basis.

People living in West Rogers Park have the advantage of numerous parks to choose from, most of which are dog-friendly. Down the western edge of the community are two parks. The first is Lincolnwood Centennial Park which runs along both banks of the North Shore Channel. The park offers plenty of trails along which are 18 statues within the park boundaries. The North Shore Channel Trail runs for 6.5 miles from the bay all the way into the city.

For the nearest dog park, you have only to cruise over to the shore of Lake Michigan and the Edgewater Dog Park. This is a large dog park with a community water bowl, lots of shade trees, and best of all, plenty of space for you and your dog to run around together or, better yet, for them to run around with all the other dogs in the park while you kick back in the shade.
