Highland Village is a neighborhood in west Bloomington, Indiana and it is bordered by 3rd Street to the north and S. Curry Pike to the east. The neighborhood is a quiet, mostly residential community with a main commercial drag along 3rd Street that has a grocery store, a pharmacy, and a fitness center for residents to utilize. There is also an elementary school and the Monroe County Airport just outside the western boundaries of the neighborhood.

Being located on the northern side of the Midwest, Bloomington still experiences a full range of all the seasons, but it tends to have colder lows and milder highs. The warm months in the city can be beautiful with temperatures rarely exceeding 90 degrees even during the height of summer. Its winters have average lows in the mid-to-low-20s, however, so it will be important to take along a jacket on your walk in order to keep warm.

The terrain in Highland Village is mild and mostly flat. Unlike other areas in the more southern and central parts of the city, the western area of Bloomington is overwhelmingly flat and will give you few problems while you are on a walk. This can be especially ideal for senior dogs or other dogs with medical conditions that can be exacerbated by exercise.

Though the neighborhood is mostly residential, you will have to deal with some foot and street traffic during regular rush hour times. The main drags of 3rd Street and S. Curry Pike have many popular shopping destinations and they are often jam-packed with people who are stopping by on their way home from work. However, these major roads all exist on the outskirts of the neighborhood, so if you stick to its central sections while you walk your dog, you should be able to avoid most of the commotion.

The only parks or greenways within the boundaries of Highland Village are Karst Farm Park and the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Karst Farm Park is a large park in the southwestern corner of Highland Village with soccer fields, disc golf, several play areas for children, and seven picnic shelters to enjoy. Its large amount of green space makes it an ideal place for dog walking that is within easy walking distance of any place in Highland Village.

The Monroe County Fairgrounds lie directly adjacent to Karst Farm Park which is a site that provides a good secondary option for dog walking in the area. There is a lot of open green space when the fairgrounds aren’t in use, but the fairgrounds may not be the best place to take a dog that dislikes loud noise or airplanes due to the close proximity to a large airport in the area.
