Dog walkers and their pets enjoy warm weather throughout the year. Winters are mild with temperatures usually well above freezing. Warmer months can see more rain, so keep a rain jacket and umbrella handy to stay dry while out on excursions with your canine companion. Summer days can be very hot and humid which can be uncomfortable for long walks and even dangerous if heat-related illness occur. Take precautions by walking at cooler times of the day in shady locations and ensure that you and your dog have plenty of water.
The area is mostly residential and was developed back in the early 20th century. Many homes feature historic and vintage architecture and properties are heavily landscaped with lots of trees in the neighborhood. This makes the community attractive and green.
Redevelopment and new builds have occurred after damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. Residential streets now have separate sidewalks for people and pets to use on local strolls without sharing the road with traffic. The terrain is level and there are no hills to climb while trekking with your furry friend.
Milne Playground is located on the northern border and provides a local community park with open fields, a few trees, paved walking paths, and recreational facilities that can be easily reached on foot by Gentilly Terrace dog walkers. Larger greenways are a short drive away.
City Park is 10 minutes west and is a vast urban park with numerous amenities. At 1,300 acres and full of interconnecting trails, this is a dog walker's paradise. There is even a 4.6-acre off-leash dog park! This enclosed dog park has separate areas for large and small dogs, paved walking paths, doggie pools, and waste disposal facilities. The other areas of the park require your dog to remain on a leash but provide plenty to see and do.
For waterfront strolls, you and your pup can drive north to Lake NC for walks on lakefront trails or south to the Mississippi River and to Crescent Park where riverfront trails and a small enclosed dog run are situated.
