Arlington is a small subsection of the neighborhood of Mariners’ Harbor, located on the North Shore of Staten Island, New York. Mariners’ Harbor lies directly next to Bayonne Bridge and is bordered by Newark Bay on its north side. Arlington is just a half an hour drive from New York City center and also within driving distance of the many parks Staten Island, the greenest New York City boroughs have to offer, providing the best of urban living and rural environment.
There are numerous dog-friendly amenities in Arlington’s surrounding area including pet stores along Richmond Avenue because you never know when you may need an emergency supply of poop bags! You'll also have access to Staten Island Animal Hospital just a ten-minute drive away. This is a service you should hopefully never have to use but having easy access to it can give peace of mind just in case!
Arlington is predominantly a residential neighborhood with some industrial areas. As such, it is mostly built up with houses and sidewalks covering the land space. Sneakers or sandals are fine for wandering around these streets or for visiting The Big Park. Walk up South Avenue northwards if you want to get some views of Newark Bay and Shooter’s Island, or southwards to reach Staten Island Industrial Park. Everywhere is within walking distance of this small neighborhood, so you can explore and give your pooch their much-needed exercise at the same time!
Staten Island has a large number of greenways and many of them are within walking distance of Arlington. Many of these parks, such as Mariner’s Marsh Park and Goethals Pond Complex, are forested with some marshlands. As such, hiking boots or rain boots may be required if you wish to go on an adventure in one of these parklands. Remember to pack a towel for muddy paws!
Within Arlington, there is one greenway called The Big Park, found on Grandview Avenue. The Big Park, although not being as big as it sounds, is perfect for the whole family, offering multiple activities with sports courts, a children’s play area, park benches, and a multipurpose area on which you can walk your pooch.
Staten Island has the most parkland of all the New York City boroughs and Arlington is driving distance from them. One such green space is Westerleigh Park where dog owners meet for unofficial playdates early in the morning. Meet fellow dog-lovers and let your pooch meet some new friends at this park just a ten-minute drive away!
Another green space is the large and beautiful Willowbrook Park that boasts stunning views of a lake and multiple activities including playgrounds, tennis courts, archery, and ballfields. What’s more, Willowbrook Park also has an off-leash dog park, perfect for tiring out even the most energetic of pooches!
