North Hills is a neighborhood in the Sligo Creek area of Silver Spring, Maryland, a suburban community tucked just north of the city limits of Washington, DC. Like many of the towns in Maryland and Virginia that border Washington, Silver Spring is a pleasant residential space full of middle and upper-class commuters and their families. North Hills is located right next to the Sligo Creek golf course which is a popular attraction for residents of the neighborhood.
The weather in Silver Spring is typical of many mid-Atlantic cities and towns: very hot and humid in the summertime, but still cold and occasionally windy in the winter. If you walk in either of these seasons, make sure to take the proper precautions for both you and your dog in case of either extreme. However, the transitional seasons of fall and spring can be lovely in Silver Spring with temperatures hovering between 50 and 70 degrees.
The terrain in North Hills isn’t consistently flat or hilly. Instead, it fluctuates as you move between parts of the neighborhood. The areas near the golf course are naturally more variable in their terrain with hills and inclines occasionally cropping up even on the main roads of the neighborhood. Other areas, especially those near the northern and eastern borders of the neighborhood, are flat and mild.
Though some areas of Silver Spring have very heavy commuter traffic during rush hour, North Hills is quieter and more tucked away. You aren’t likely to deal with much foot or street traffic during the day, but rush hour times can still become busy on the main roads. If you are looking to avoid some of the commotions of Silver Spring, it will be best to stick to the golf course and wooded areas of the North Hills neighborhood to enjoy a quieter stroll.
There are tons of green areas and parks within and around North Hills. As mentioned earlier, the Sligo Creek Golf Course is the largest and most easily accessible green area in the neighborhood. Located along the western side of the neighborhood, it is several acres long and has lots of walking trails in the woods around its main golf course.
Directly adjacent to the golf course on its north side is Arygle Local Park which is a 9 acre community park that has a playground, several athletic fields, open green fields, a picnic area, and an indoor fitness facility. South Four Corners Park is just a few feet away from the eastern edge of Argyle. It is 4 acres in size and designed more for casual park goers than those looking for athletic facilities. It is the best place for dog walking in the neighborhood because of its freeform environment, open fields, and walking trails.
