Smack bang in the center of the Bronx is where you will find the neighborhood of Belmont. This landlocked neighborhood has clearly defined boundaries with East Fordham Road, a major thoroughfare, making up its northern boundary. Just on the other side of it, you’ll find the Fordham University campus and the New York Botanical Gardens. If you head eastwards from Belmont, you’ll find Southern Boulevard and the Bronx Zoo, an exciting weekend destination for families. Southwards is 180th Street and Tremont while, if you head west from the area, you’ll encounter Webster Avenue and Fordham Heights.

This is accessible from Belmont and the surrounding areas due to its location on this major thoroughfare.
Belmont is a relatively hilly area when compared to some of the other neighborhoods in New York City. Within the neighborhood boundaries, the elevation creeps up from 32 ft. above sea level in the southeast to approximately 92 ft. near the Quarry Ball Fields. You are likely to experience some noticeable inclines. Despite this, most of the land hovers around 85 ft. above sea level, so the majority of your walk, you’ll find easy to manage.
Belmont is a largely residential neighborhood. Its city center location means that houses and businesses are tightly packed so most of the terrain you’ll find will be artificial. Luckily, New York City is full of greenways. If your pooch is missing the grass under their toes, you’ll be able to find something of the sort nearby. There are a few small greenways within the neighborhood boundaries. However, some of these are primarily reserved for certain activities. For example, Quarry Ballfields is intended for use by those playing ball games and dogs are not allowed in the grounds. Tremont Park is located just south of Belmont. These beautiful gardens have a few walking trails as well as a seasonal spray park. This is a popular one with families, especially in the summer months.
Thain Family Forest is situated just to the north of Belmont. Here, you’ll find a variety of trees set within a well-cared-for woodland. There is loads of wildlife here and a variety of trails. Locals report it to be one of their favorite places to relax and enjoy nature, so it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the neighborhood.
