Fort Hamilton is the location of the only active duty military installation in New York City. Located on the south side of Brooklyn, this military base has some commercial activities and rental accommodations for residents. Amenities like the Fort Hamilton Community Club, a bowling center, a veterans hospital, and a fast food outlet are located here and there are more shops and services to the northwest in Bay Ridge where a veterinarian and pet store can be accessed by local dog owners.

New York weather varies, but you can count on rain in this coastal location any time of year, so have umbrellas and rain gear handy. Winters are cold and occasional snow occurs, making footing treacherous. Later in the year, Atlantic storm systems, which can be severe, occasionally manifest. When severe weather with high winds and heavy rain occurs, postpone walking your dog as conditions can be hazardous to exposed pedestrians and pets.

Fort Hamilton is a military installation with many industrial facilities related to the base's activities. The area also boasts rental accommodations. There are townhouses, apartments, and some single-family homes in the region. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge access, Interstate 278, runs along the northwest side and the bridge crosses the Gravesend Bay at Fort Hamilton.

Gravesend Bay extends along the south side and is a prominent waterfront feature. A golf course on the north side provides manicured green space on the community's border. The terrain is flat and it is not difficult for dog walkers and their pooches to navigate the neighborhood. Sidewalks and pedestrian paths are located in the neighborhood, so when you are strolling with your dog, you and your pup won't have to share the road with local traffic.

The Belt Parkway extends along the south side and creates an impediment for on foot travel to the coast.

Fort Hamilton has a greenway at the Bay-8th Street Field. This area consists of several ball fields and open lawns with a paved pedestrian path on the grounds where you can take your dog for a stroll.

Several blocks to the east, you can walk with your dog to the three-acre Bath Beach Park. This small but attractive park has ball fields, basketball and handball courts, a playground and spray park, and restrooms. Paved paths and trees make it a nice place to walk with your dog and a pedestrian bridge is located here that crosses the Belt Parkway, providing access to the waterfront trail.

The Bayridge-Belt Parkway promenade runs along the waterfront for a total of 12 miles. Enough hiking trail for even the most energetic pup, this paved multi-use trail boasts views of the harbor and surrounding urban skylines. Watch out for cyclists, inline skaters, and joggers, keep your dog leashed, and be prepared to clean up after your pet.
