Oakwood is a southeast Staten Island neighborhood. The Tysens Park Shopping Center is located on the northeast side and has a grocery store, coffee shop, restaurants, and other services available to residents traveling on foot. There is a large chain pet store located here that dog owners can walk to with their furry friends. Veterinary services are located in the communities to the northeast.

When walking in this Staten Island neighborhood, you and your dog will need some rain gear to stay dry as it frequently rains in this coastal location. When subfreezing temperatures hit the area, precipitation can turn to snow or freezing rain, making walkways icy. Summers are hot and humid. Usually, breezes from the water cool the region somewhat, but heat-related illnesses can occur when conditions are extreme. Pack water and avoid overexposure during heat waves when cool sea breezes are not present to moderate temperatures.

Oakwood is bordered by the Lower Bay on the southeast side, Hylan Boulevard on the northwest, Great Kills Park on the southwest side, and the New Dorp Beach community on the northeast. There is a wastewater treatment plant on the south side of the community and this is not a pet or pedestrian-friendly section of the neighborhood.

Most of the residential dwellings in the district are detached single-family homes, but there are also semi-detached duplexes, townhomes, and some apartment complexes. The terrain is fairly level and there are no steep hills to trek up and down in the area, so pets and people of all ability levels can get around without difficulty. Sidewalks are prevalent in the region and dog walkers do not have to share the roads with traffic.

Private properties are well landscaped for a developed urban neighborhood with many large shade trees in the district. Because this is still a busy urban neighborhood, be sure to keep your dog leashed.

The Great Kills Park is located to the southwest of the Oakwood neighborhood. This large natural area has four beaches: New Dorp Beach, Oakwood Beach, Cedar Grove Beach, and Fox Beach. There are kayak and canoe launch sites located at local beaches and playgrounds in the greenway. Wetlands and natural areas help prevent flooding and erosion in the region. Hard surfaced walking trails in this 315-acre greenway provide great places to walk with your leashed pet. Access to dogs on beaches is limited, especially during warmer months, so check online to see if you can visit these waterfront areas with your pooch.

The Dugan Playground is located on the east side of Oakwood and provides developed recreational greenway to locals. There is a playground and circular spray park as well as ball fields and restrooms. Access to sports fields and playgrounds by dogs is not permitted, however, leashed pets are allowed on paved walkways in the area.
