Grymes Hill is a residential neighborhood located in the northeast section of Staten Island, New York. The neighborhood is home to two large colleges: Wagner College and St. John’s University. Students and residents can walk to services including restaurants and other commercial businesses on Richmond Road that runs approximately north-south on the east side of the neighborhood. 


The weather in New York can be rainy, so be prepared with good waterproof outerwear, especially if you like to walk your dog daily in the area. Winters are cool, although the coastal location mitigates temperatures somewhat, and a warm jacket for winter walks will be required. Summers can be hot and humid, so be sure to bring water for you and your dog if you are taking a long hike with your hound. Autumn weather is ideal for on-foot travel with warm temperatures and beautiful fall colors in the neighborhood.

Grymes Hill is a 0.894-mile residential and university neighborhood with a population of 8200 people. The neighborhood is located on a hill that is the highest point on Staten Island and when walking in the region, you will need to climb some steep inclines to get around. The hill provides beautiful views of the surrounding areas and roads are winding to accommodate the hilly terrain. 

The two large colleges located here are St. John’s Campus which takes up 16.5 acres and Wagner College, occupying 110 acres. Academic buildings and student residences are located on and around these campuses. Most homes in the neighborhood are single-family homes which are rare for Staten Island areas. Homes feature varying unique architecture are including craftsman styles which are unique. There are also apartment buildings located in Grymes Hill and two cemeteries. The neighborhood is extremely green with landscaping on private properties and campuses.

Within walking distance for Grymes Hill residents is Silver Lake Park, located northwest of the neighborhood. Silver Lake has lots of shade trees, open green spaces, and recreational facilities on 209 acres of parkland. There are lots of trails and greenways where you can take your dog for a stroll on a leash and an enclosed off-leash dog run. The Silver Lake Dog Run has double gated entries and three separate areas for different sized dogs. 

Cloves Lake Park is also located nearby and has rocky outcroppings displaying the region's serpentine rocks. The park also has lakes and ponds, a 100-year-old tulip tree, and lots of trails and recreation areas. The park also has off-leash areas where you are allowed to let your dog loose, providing your pup is kept under control, so make sure you have good off leash recall!
