Heartland Village is a popular residential neighborhood located centrally in Staten Island. Its proximity to the Staten Island Mall has made it incredibly sought-after since it offers great access to so many amenities. It is also surrounded by a large amount of green space known as Fresh Kills Park. Its main neighbor is the area known as New Springville which is bounded to the northeast by Richmond Hill Road. To the east, south, and west, Fresh Kills Park and its river surround the Village on all sides.

A few animal supply stores can be found in Pargament Enterprises Mall on Richmond Avenue. Between the two available chain stores, you’ll find all you need in terms of grooming products, toys, and pet food. Staten Island Hope Animal Rescue is also located in this area, so if you’re looking for a new friend, be sure to check out this place before you head to any pet stores!

Heartland Village marks the start of a slight incline towards the steepest part of Staten Island and around Todt Hill. Most of the terrain is fairly level, however, if you head northeast, you’ll encounter an increase in the gradient. Walking along Richmond Hill Road towards Forest Hill Road will take you up the steepest part, so avoid this area if you’re concerned about your pooch’s fitness levels.

This neighborhood is primarily renowned for its impressive shopping malls and it’s no surprise that the terrain in these parts is mostly artificial. You’ll find a large number of car lots as well as asphalt streets, houses, and stores. The area encircling Heartland Village is, however, entirely natural. Fresh Kills Park with its river and wetlands are incredibly nearby. So if you’re looking to get grass under your pooch’s paws, you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding it as long as you known where you're headed.

You have a great choice of greenways if you’re located in the Heartland Village Area. While the neighborhood itself is largely built-up, numerous parks and wetlands are nearby. Latourette Park is just east of the Village as you head along Richmond Hill Road or Forest Avenue. From here, you can access numerous walking trails that will help you spend the hours with your pooch, tiring them out and giving them a lot of fun.

North of Heartland Village, you’ll find the William T. Wildlife Refuge. There are miles of boardwalks covering the wetlands here, so it’s perfect for a walk if you’re after something a little different. The birds and other animals that live in harmony here will whisk you away from the city life to something a little quieter and more peaceful. For a waterside walk, head to Fresh Kills Park and join the river’s edge. Give your pooch a little swim to cool down.
