Richmond Town is a residential and historic district centrally located on Staten Island. There are few commercial businesses located in the community that are within walking distance, however, a historic interpretive park, schools, and a library are all located in Richmond Town that nearby residents can reach on foot. There is also a small commercial area in the south off of Amboy Road where some services are available.

Richmond Town residents and their furry friends experience a variety of weather while walking in the neighborhood. New York summers tend to be hot and humid and light, breathable clothing with drinkable water on long treks for you and your pup is advised when muggy conditions occur. Winters are cool and wet with rain, sleet, and snow. Although the cold temperatures are somewhat moderated by the coastal location, warm outerwear for cool, damp weather and good footwear for snowy and icy conditions are necessary for pedestrians.

Richmond Town is located between the Lighthouse Hill, New Dorp, Oak Wood, Bay Terrace, and Great Kills neighborhoods. There are train tracks running along the eastern border that impede pedestrian travel and several large cemeteries on the south side of the community providing manicured landscaping and greenery to the region. The terrain has some hills and inclines, although most slopes are gradual and do not pose a significant problem.

Most of the residences in the neighborhood are single-family homes with well-landscaped properties and sidewalks with grass berms on residential streets. Shaded streets make more pleasant walking locations than less landscaped, concrete areas and are enjoyed by locals with their pets. There are some historic buildings, a historic park, and two historic churches in the region that lend beautiful architecture to the community. Natural areas and parks to the east and north give the area a park-like quality and much needed shade in summer.

The Willowbrook Parkway sits on the east side of Richmond Town. This is a long, narrow strip of natural wooded area providing just under 200 acres of wildlife habitat. Natural trails in the parkway or on adjacent residential streets provide greenways for walking your dog but trails in the parkway are unmaintained and terrain varies with weather conditions.

The Frederick Douglass Memorial Park contains a memorial to the social reformer and abolitionist. The park has large green lawns with some trees and paved pedestrian paths. Alternatively, Latourette Park is located to the west of Richmond Town. This 760-acre park has eateries, historic houses, and is popular with model aircraft aficionados.

High Rock Park is located just north. With 94 acres of wooded areas, ponds, and wetlands, this park is noted for its tranquility. There are six walking trails in the park taking visitors and their pets through unique local trees and foliage.
