Inevitably, with a name like Todt Hill, you’ll find that the neighborhood has some pretty significant hills. In fact, the center of the neighborhood is the summit of Staten Island and the highest point in the whole of the five boroughs of New York. This is a wooded area that can easily be accessed to walk through if you’re looking for some terrain that is a little challenging. It’s a great feeling of satisfaction when you reach the top!
The majority of the neighborhood is made up of houses and residential streets, therefore, you’ll find there is a large portion of artificial terrain in Todt Hill. However, the hill itself is left to its own natural devices, so you’ll find this forested area ideal if you’re looking for something a little wild. Essentially, the whole of the neighborhood is a mixture of parkland or private homes, so you’ll find a good balance of terrain.
Other than the hill itself, another great greenway in the area is Deere Park. This is located just north of Ocean Terrace and is easily reached from almost anywhere within the neighborhood. It’s actually classed as a nature reserve, so there’s a big focus on maintaining the area’s natural birds and wildlife. Head here for the ultimate escape from city life.
Alternatively, Richmond Parkway is also nearby. Head here to follow the yellow trail all the way down to High Rock Park. This epic walking trail is just made for long weekend hikes that will make you appreciate the Staten Island Greenbelt for what it is – pure bliss.
