Mount Vernon is a modest community of mixed housing including single-family houses and multistory apartments. The area is tucked in a corner created by the junction of I-670 and I-71. It is home to Beatty Park Elementary School, perfect for those with younger school-age children. There are several parks within a twenty-minute drive for you to check out, including the Columbus Downtown Dog Park.

Within a ten to fifteen minute drive, there are any number of excellent restaurants for the foodie in you, especially as you head further into downtown Columbus. As always, no matter where you are in the greater Columbus area, you are within driving distance of at least one pet supply store.

Spring and fall are the perfect time of year to go for long walks in the afternoon. In the summer, you will need to switch to mornings before the pavement becomes too hot.

Living in Mount Vernon, the bulk of your walks are going to be on the cement sidewalks running throughout the community. Make sure you go around different blocks each time you go out to keep your walks interesting. This is a relatively small neighborhood, compared to a few of the others in Columbus. You may feel the need to venture out and into neighboring communities to explore a differentiation in terrain.

The majority of the area is flat, though you will experience some small gradients in the terrain up towards the north and along the highways there. While you are probably better off not walking along these roads to begin with, you'll still need to keep an eye out for any tricky spots that are difficult to navigate.

The elementary school can present some issues with traffic during school pick-up and drop-off times, so try to schedule your walks around those hours to ensure you don't run afoul of any passing vehicles.

There are several areas of green space in the community including the playing fields at both the Monroe Alternative Middle School and at Saunders Park where you will also find a public swimming pool. The vast area of grass are an excellent place for you and your pup to walk and play as long as you keep them on a leash and clean up any messes they leave behind.

To the south is the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, an 88-acre indoor-outdoor park with gardens to enjoy, lots of pathways to walk on, and large areas of grass to relax on.

Next to Franklin Park is Wolfe Park, a vast green area with a field house and a baseball diamond. This is an excellent place to bring Fido and the rest of the family for a picnic and some fun playing and running around together under the blue skies and hot summer sun.
