The Gables is a predominantly residential neighborhood located in Columbus, Ohio. A shopping and commercial district is located within easy walking distance for residents along Bethel Road. Here, locals can access restaurants, shops, and other necessary services without needing to leave the area in a vehicle.

Dog walkers will experience all four distinct seasons and various weather conditions. Winters are cold with average daily temperatures below freezing, an average amount of snow, and occasional winter storms and blizzards. Having a warm winter coat and footwear will allow you to take your dog out in spite of the chilly conditions. Summers are warm and temperatures rarely get extremely hot, so simple precautions to stay hydrated and not overexert yourself are adequate. Columbus has its fair share of rain, so waterproof gear and an umbrella may also come in handy. Be aware that severe thunderstorms as even tornados occasionally occur in the Gables area.

The Gables is a mostly residential neighborhood bordered by the Ohio State University Airport on the north side, Bethel Road on the south side, Godown road on the east side, and Slate Run Ravine and Creek on the west border.

Dwellings in the area consist of newer homes, apartment complexes, and condo developments. Many of the complexes have communal grounds and artificial lakes providing green spaces for residents in the region. Properties are neatly landscaped with well-manicured lawns, gardens, and plenty of trees. Residential roads have separate sidewalks creating safe walkways for pedestrians and pets. Grassy berms separate sidewalks from roadways and create cool footing and added safety.

A small creek and ravine extend into the community on the west side and provide a natural space. The terrain is level and there are no steep hills for you and your canine companion to climb on strolls about the Gables neighborhood.

To the south, Northcrest Park is located within walking distance and provides an 18.5-acre park with recreational amenities and a perimeter paved walking trail that makes an ideal walking spot in the area. The park is mostly open with sports fields and some trees dotted about the greenway. Facilities in the park include ball diamonds, tennis and basketball courts, a playground, and picnic tables.

A longer walk east will take you to the Olentangy River and several parks along the river banks. The Olentangy Trail runs along the river and can be accessed here. The trail is 17.5 miles long with several trailheads and access to numerous parks. The trail is hard surfaced and used by cyclists, inline skaters, cross-country skiers in winter, hikers, and joggers. Keep your dog leashed on the trail and watch out for people fishing with fishing gear so your dog does not get tangled in lines or on a hook!
