Located on the north side of Columbus, Ohio, Whetstone is an attractive, walkable neighborhood on the east banks of the Olentangy River. Many local businesses including shops, restaurants, and other services can be accessed on the High Street which runs north-south on the east border.

Weather in Columbus varies with the seasons. Winters are cold and snowy while summers are warm and sometimes stormy. You will need a good winter jacket to stay warm walking your dog during winter months and good footwear for traction when conditions are icy. If your pup has a short coat, is small, or not used to chilly temperatures, your pup might need some winter gear too. During warmer months, rain showers occur occasionally and more severe thunderstorms need to be avoided as they can present dangerous conditions for exposed pedestrian and pets with lightning, high winds, hail, and torrential rains.

The west side of the neighborhood is where the predominant landscape feature is the river. It is lined with green spaces with natural and recreational areas. The east side has a commercial thoroughfare running north-south with less landscaping and more noise and traffic.

Most of the Whetstone neighborhood is made up of attractive vintage homes with large backyards and good setbacks. Private properties are well balanced with lawns, trees, and gardens The neighborhood is heavily treed and shady, however, residential roads do not have separate sidewalks for pedestrians and pets. You can walk on grassy berms in most places that border the street and are maintained by private property owners.

Where grassy areas are not available for walking, you may need to share the road with local traffic. Walk on the right side of the road and keep your dog securely leashed. There are some gentle slopes in the neighborhood, but they are not steep or difficult to traverse.

The Whetstone Park is located on the west side of the neighborhood and is connected to Whetstone High School and community recreation grounds. A pond is situated here and there are plenty of sports fields and athletic facilities for locals to use. The park has paved trails to get around, connecting to the Olentangy River Trail.

A unique urban garden, known as the Columbus Park of Roses, provides a beautifully manicured garden in the greenway. Dogs are allowed in the rose garden, but must stay on trails and be leashed at all times. If you take the Olentangy Trail south, Northmoor Park is located nearby and provides 9 acres of wooded areas to explore with your pet.

Overbrook Ravine Park is also located within walking distance for Whetstone residents and their canine companions, providing ten areas of natural woodlands with a creek. The terrain in this park is more natural and hiking trails in the park can be rough.
