Russell is a community on the northeast side of Portland, Oregon, approximately a 15-minute commute to the downtown area. There is a commercial corridor on the west boundary of the community on 122nd Avenue. This street has many restaurants, shops, and services that locals of Russell can reach on foot. Pet owners can walk to the Gateway Veterinary Hospital on Halsey Street just a few blocks east of the community.

Dog walkers in Russell will want to be prepared for wet weather for much of the year. You should have an umbrella and rain jacket to stay dry on daily excursions. If your dog doesn't like getting wet or you just don't like that wet dog smell when you get home, you can even get a doggie umbrella, rain jacket, and boots to keep your pup dry too! Winters are cool, but daily temperatures usually rise above freezing, however, when the temperatures dip, wet surfaces can freeze, creating treacherous conditions. Exercise caution during the winter months!

Russell is bordered by Vietnam Veterans Memorial Freeway on its northern border, 122nd  Avenue on the west side, 142 Avenue on the east side, and Halsey Street on the south. The west side commercial thoroughfare is heavily trafficked, as is Halsey Street, and the north side freeway creates an impediment to on foot travel. Where traffic and noise are present, make sure your dog is leashed, under control, and accustomed to vehicles.

Most of Russell is comprised of residential areas with quiet streets. Many streets in the area do not have sidewalks, so you may need to share the road with local traffic.

Homes in the area are moderate in size, single-family detached dwellings and are situated on well maintained and landscaped properties. Lots of large shade trees grace the area which is relatively level with no steep hills to climb. You should be able to take cover from some of the midday heat in the summer months!

Russell has two community parks to enjoy with your dog. John Luby City Park is 10.85 acres in size and has paved and unpaved walking paths for strolls with your pet as well as a playground. Thompsons City Park is 4.33 acres of open green space associated with the local school. The parks are open from 5AM to midnight and your dog must remain on a leash to use these spaces.

Just a few city blocks to the south in the adjacent neighborhood of Hazelwood is the East Holladay Park. This park has recreational amenities, a play area, and walking trails on 5.5 acres of land. Most importantly, your canine companion will enjoy that East Holladay Park is a pet-friendly park and is a designated off-leash area. Because it is not securely enclosed, your dog must have good off-leash recall and be well socialized with people and pets to play in this area.
