University Park is located on the north side of Portland, 20 minutes from the city’s downtown area. Lombard Street runs along the north side of University Park and is lined with restaurants, shops, and services. Pet owners in the region can easily reach the St. Johns Veterinary Clinic which is located in the area.  

Portland has wet weather during the spring, fall, and winter and having a good waterproof jackets and footwear is a must for dog walkers to enjoy long outings with their pets year round. You can even get rain gear for your dog if required! Winters are cool, while temperatures are usually above freezing. University Park is bordered by North Lombard Street on the north, North Chautauqua Boulevard on the east, the Willamette River on the south, and the North Portland railroad cut on the east. The Mocks Bottom Industrial Area is located to the southeast and the University of Portland campus, sports fields, and facilities occupy a section of the south side of the community. 


Homes in the area tend to be on tightly packed lots that are well landscaped with large trees and lots of vegetation, making it a nice, shady place to stroll with your four-legged friend. Some area homes are older and feature Colonial and Queen Anne Victorian architecture. 


The terrain is flat and there are no steep hills to climb while walking with your dog. Sidewalks are prevalent in the community, so you and your dog should not have to share the road with traffic but can enjoy separate, safe walkways.

Columbia Park is situated on the far east side of the neighborhood and occupies 35 acres. The park has multiple recreational facilities and athletic fields, some of which are lighted to allow for nighttime use. Other amenities include restrooms, picnic tables, and a playground and splash pad. The park has paved walking paths and lots of treed areas providing shelter and shade with some open grassy areas. The greenway provides plenty of opportunities to hike with your leashed pet.

McKenna Park is four acres in size and is also located in University Park. The greenway has a basketball court, playground, soccer, and softball field. There are paved paths through the park for walks with your furry friend.

Portsmouth Park is also easily accessed on foot in the University Park neighborhood and occupies four acres. There are sports fields and a playground in the park which has open and treed areas to visit with your pup while strolling the neighborhood.
