If you enjoy exploring bustling residential communities with a mix of college students and older families, then Fern Rock is the place for your next walk. This North Philadelphia neighborhood is home to La Salle University, several elementary and secondary schools, and several playgrounds. Comprised of so many different institutions and things to do, its changing landscape provides an interesting place for a walk with your pet. You can find townhomes along quiet streets, explore sprawling parks, or walk the business area to window shop.

North Broad Street is the main area where you’ll find a few chain restaurants and places to shop. Unfortunately, there aren’t any pet stores in the area, but if you run into an emergency, the Broad Street Animal Hospital sits in the center of the neighborhood and Wyncote Animal Hospital is a few blocks north of Fern Rock.

With mostly flat streets, Fern Rock is a great neighborhood to walk older dogs, but don’t be surprised if you find a small incline here or there, especially in the parks. While there are many quiet streets with blocks of townhomes and apartment buildings, Fern Rock does have its fair share of busy roadways. Roosevelt Boulevard makes up the neighborhood’s southern border and is one of the busiest streets in Fern Rock. The sidewalks are narrow and close to the road, so be sure to keep your pet on a tight leash if you plan on walking there.

Apart from a few busy roadways, Fern Rock provides a nice place to walk your pet because of its lush green areas. Some of the roads cross parks, making for a nice stroll under shady trees. There are also plenty of grassy spots throughout the neighborhood if you’re in need of a rest.

In addition to a street filled with businesses, a university, and residential streets, Fern Rock also boasts several expansive parks. Though there aren’t any dog parks nearby, Fern Rock’s parks happily welcome leashed dogs. If you’re walking along North Broad Street, you’ll find a stretch of grass situated in front of the Einstein Medical Center. The lawn features paved walking paths that you can walk along to escape the busy sidewalks. In the south, Stenton Park Playground is a large recreation area with walking paths, shaded sitting areas, and a playground.

If you’re interested in a little bit of hiking, Wister Woods Park offers miles of trails in addition to classic parklands with picnic tables, disc golf courses, and plenty of recreation areas. Harpers Hollow Park and Kemble Park offer several nature trails. Though only a few acres large, these spaces allow you to escape the bustling city and enjoy some natural splendor for a moment.
