Plenty of warm, sunny days make for pleasant walking conditions, but rain is also frequent and requires a good waterproof jacket and appropriate footwear for pedestrians to stay dry. Although winters are not cold, some snow can frequently occur and make walking conditions slippery. Summers in Philadelphia can be unpleasantly hot and humid and breathable clothing while avoiding walking at the height of the day will allow pedestrians to mitigate uncomfortable conditions.

Hartranft is bordered by York Street on the north, Cecil B. Moore Avenue on the south, Front Street on the east, and 6th Street on the west. This older section of Philadelphia is well developed with narrow streets and sidewalks. The area has some inclines, although most are not steep.

Residences in the area include apartments and row houses, mostly two-to-three stories in height. There is some light industry on the southwest end and many streets transect the neighborhood with commercial activity along them. There is plenty of traffic in the community and dog walkers will need to keep their dogs leashed and be vigilant for traffic.

Front Street on the east has an elevated train track running above it which creates a unique streetscape. Structures were developed at various times and for different uses and exhibit diverse architecture. There are some lots and properties in the industrial section where no current development exists that provide open areas.

Dog walkers can take their dog through the square on paved paths but canines must remain off the playground structures.
