Carrick is a larger residential neighborhood located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This neighborhood is only four miles south of the downtown area. Historically, Carrick was once home to beautiful mansions and wealthy families, but today's neighborhood is largely home to local, middle-class families. Residentially, Carrick still has some of the larger homes, but is largely composed of standalone, single-family, mid-sized homes. There are a few apartment complexes throughout the neighborhood, but they run on the smaller side.

While it is largely residential, Carrick does have quite a few businesses and other non-residential buildings throughout. These include popular chain and fast food restaurants, a few churches and schools, some convenience stores, a public library branch, several automobile services, and a grocery store.

The larger city of Pittsburgh is an ever-growing and popular destination for tourists and young professionals. The city offers a wide variety of amenities, including several award-winning museums, its own ballet and opera companies, and well-known professional sports teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins.

Carrick lies on top of one of the larger hills surrounding the Pittsburgh area, so this neighborhood can get quite hilly. Within the central part of the neighborhood, you may find some flatter streets, but near the outer borders, you and your pup will experience some definite changes in elevation. Be sure to research your walking routes before heading out, especially if you are looking to avoid as many hills as possible.

Carrick is an older Pittsburgh neighborhood, so parts of it are not well maintained, including sidewalks. While there are an abundance of sidewalks to enjoy throughout the neighborhood, be sure to watch out for uneven areas or cracks!

The boundaries of Carrick include Borough Way to the north, Becks Run Road to the east, Owen Dale Avenue to the south, and Saw Mill Run Boulevard to the west. Carrick has plenty of access to public transportation, so be sure to look out for the T, Pittsburgh's public light-rail system.

For such a large neighborhood, there are several greenways in Carrick. Unfortunately, not all of them are public parks. In fact, there are three cemeteries in Carrick, St.John Vianney Cemetery, South Side Cemetery, and Shaare Torah Cemetery, and they are not pup-friendly.

The largest public park in Carrick is Phillips Park Disc Golf Course. As the name implies, this public park has a well-visited disc golf course, but is also home to a local recreation center and a few walking trails. Fun fact: this park was originally home to a carnival-like attraction! There were rides, vaudeville acts, and other attractions to enjoy.

The next public park in this neighborhood is Volunteers Field. This public greenway is largely composed of sporting facilities like baseball fields. It is often used for community leagues and little leagues for games, so it may make a great place to people watch, unless your pup has the inclination to chase the game ball!
