St. Edwards is a neighborhood in Southwest Austin, Texas, named for the private university that is situated here. The university grounds and facilities are centrally located in the neighborhood and accessible to residents with two large commercial areas on the southeast corner with large box stores and a smaller area on the northwest side with restaurants, shops, and services. Dog walkers in the area will find plenty of destinations to visit with schools and other facilities nearby.

St. Edward’s dog walkers do not need to layer up in bulky winter wear for cold weather as winters are mild with temperatures well above the freezing mark. However, occasional freezing rain makes walkways icy. Wait until icy surfaces melt before outings with your pup. Summers have very hot weather and severe thunderstorms which can cause heat-related illnesses and storms with high winds and flash floods can pose a hazard to pedestrians. Check forecasts for imminent weather and avoid overexposure to heat.

The St. Edwards neighborhood is bounded on its southern border by Ben White Boulevard with Interstate 35 on the east, S Congress Avenue on the west, and E Ortolf Street on the north. The terrain in the neighborhood is relatively level in most places, but there are some hills with gentle inclines that do not impede dog walkers and their pups.

Residences in the area consist of apartments, housing complexes, and moderate single-family homes. Properties are well landscaped with trees and lawns providing an attractive backdrop, but there are few sidewalks on residential roads and pedestrians need to share the roads with vehicles. Walk facing oncoming traffic and watch for vehicles.

The St Edward's campus is beautifully landscaped and there is a cemetery located in the southeast corner of the area with more manicured landscaping to beautify the district. Main roads and shopping areas have more traffic than residential areas and are not as inviting for dog walkers.

The Blunn Creek Nature preserve is located on the north end of St. Edwards. A 1.5-mile nature trail has 320 feet of elevation changes, so there are some hills to hike in the preserve. However, access by dogs is restricted, so check local bylaws before visiting with your pup.

The Mabel Davis District Park to the east can be accessed by crossing the I-35 on foot via Woodward Street to the Parker Lane neighborhood. There are walking trails accessible to dog walkers in the park along with a swimming pool and skatepark.

To the north, the Big Stacy and Little Stacy parks have lots of interesting amenities and are connected by a beautiful greenway trail. This 1-mile trail has tunnels and bridges, runs along the creek, and loops through the wooded area, making an excellent destination for you and your hike-loving hound to explore without venturing too far from home.
