West Congress is a neighborhood located in South Austin, Texas. The area has a diverse ethnic population and there are several local eateries with specialty cuisine in the community. Businesses and services are situated along Congress Avenue on the east side and there is a local veterinarian located there for dog owners to access on foot.

The northeast side and south border also have plenty of commercial activity including drug stores, restaurants, and various shops that West Congress residents can walk to.

Walking in West Congress, pedestrians do not have to contend with freezing temperatures. Winters are mild with temperatures well above the freezing mark and light jackets suffice. Summers, on the other hand, are hot with extreme heat and occasional severe storms. Flash floods, high temperatures, high winds, and hail do not create pedestrian-friendly conditions. Check forecasts and plan your daily walks to avoid severe weather that could cause a hazard to you and your pet.

West Congress is bordered on the north by Route 290, on the south by W Stassney Lane, on the east by S Congress Avenue, and by 1st Street on the west side. The Williamson Creek Greenbelt runs through the south side of the neighborhood and the creek and ravine create a natural greenbelt that extends to the east.

Most of the area is made up of single-family homes with large yards, lawns, and trees. There are some apartment complexes in the neighborhood as well. Residential streets have sidewalks to provide safe walkways for dog walkers and their furry friends.

The neighborhood is flat and there are no steep hills to contend with. Most of the neighborhood is quiet, family oriented, and peaceful with only local traffic, however, busy thoroughfares and commercial areas on the borders have more traffic and noise. If your dog is skittish, you should avoid these areas.

The Williamson Creek Greenbelt has nature trails and the main trail that pedestrians with pups, joggers, hikers, and cyclists frequent. Watch out for other users, keep your dog leashed, and be prepared to clean up after your pet.

The St. Elmo's School Park is located in the community on the northwest border. There are sports and recreation fields and facilities in the park and paved walking trails to stroll with your dog.

The McKinney Falls State Park has over 700 acres of natural and recreational areas to explore with your canine companion, miles of trails, local wildlife, and connects to other parks, recreation facilities, and trails in the area. The Onion Creek Recreation area just south of the state park also has an off-leash area your pup will love playing in. Just make sure your dog is well socialized and has good off-leash recall as the park is not fenced.
