Olmos Park Terrace is a residential community located north of San Antonio, Texas. It is about a 15-minute commute to the central business district, however, Olmos Park Terrace residents and their furry friends can walk to local businesses along San Pedro Avenue on the west side of the community where eateries, shops, and services are available.

The weather in San Antonio is amenable to walking with your pet all year. Winters are fairly mild with day time temperatures usually well above freezing and no significant accumulation of snowfall which is very rare. Freezing rain events create treacherous walking surfaces. You and your dog should wait until surfaces thaw before venturing out on excursions. Summers are very hot and, midday temperatures especially, can be uncomfortable and even dangerous for long hikes where people and pets can become overly stressed, exposed or dehydrated. Make sure you and your dog drink lots of water and take shorter walks at cooler times of the day in extreme heat.

Olmos Park is bordered by San Pedro Avenue on the west, train tracks on the east, West Hermosa Drive on the south, and Basse Road on the north. There is a gun club with a large open green space on the northeast corner of the region and several large sports fields beside it to the west.

The east side of the area is a large natural park in the Olmos Basin which is heavily wooded. The neighborhood has single-family homes of moderate size, many of which are English Stone cottage architecture with well landscaped and maintained yards featuring lawns and trees.

Most residential roads have sidewalks and even grassy berms which are ideal for dog walkers and their pups, but some area streets have no separate walkways and you and your dog will need to share the road with local traffic. Luckily, the terrain is flat and there are no steep hills to trek up and down.

Olmos Park Terrace is conveniently located right next to the Olmos Basin, a natural and recreational greenway that is contiguous with Brackenridge Park to the south. The area comprises 343 acres with miles of hiking trails to enjoy with your canine companion.

The Olmos Basin Park trailhead is located near the community and is a popular place to go for a regular stroll with your pooch. The trail is decomposed granite for good drainage and is just under a mile long. Another half mile trail is also located in the area. Main trails are fairly well surfaced, but side trails can be treacherous in wet weather, so use caution.

The greenway has multiple athletic and sports fields and facilities and the park to the south contains a zoo, museum, outdoor theater venue, and gardens. These attractions are off limits to your pup, but the natural areas are welcoming for your leashed canine. Don't forget to be prepared with supplies to clean up after them!
