Sehome is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Bellingham and was once its own town by the same name. The neighborhood is built on a large hill which gives stunning views of the bay and Mt. Baker and it is one of the higher points in Bellingham. Despite being right off the downtown area, it has a lot of tree-lined roads and gives off a nice suburban feel. Commercial areas are restricted to the perimeter where you can easily find restaurants and stores. Your pup’s luck is just as good as there are pet supplies and grooming available as well as vet services in the southeastern corner of the neighborhood.

Despite the region’s reputation for lots of rain, there are plenty of dry days and with mild temperatures most of the year, you can walk almost every day. There is the rare snow, but other than that, there is not a lot to stop you from walking.

With elevations up to 650 feet, you can imagine that there are plenty of hills in the area. The nice thing about this neighborhood, however, is that it is also very possible to walk on flat terrain. For those who are up for the extra effort, there are more than enough hills in this neighborhood to get you and your dog’s hearts pumping.

Exercise caution, however, because if you have just started walking, make sure that your pup is up for your ambitious plans. Dogs have the same basic restrictions as us and it can be detrimental to take a couch potato puppy and expect them to walk five miles of difficult terrain. Some of the main streets do have sidewalks, but expect many of the side streets to not have sidewalks or shoulders. Be sure to dress in bright clothes so that motorists can see you clearly if you must walk on the road.

You have three options when it comes to greenways in Sehome. There is a small park in the south-central part of the neighborhood called Laurel Park. This park has some grass, a playground, and some benches, but little else. Still, it is a nice place to stop if you have been walking and you need a break. Remember that if you are feeling tired and winded, there is a chance your pup is as well.

Forest and Cedar Park are in the southwestern corner and feature a lot of grass and trees, a place to rest, and bathrooms. Your last option is the Sehome Hill Arboretum. This 180-acre nature park is a project of the neighboring university, so it has a lot of native species for you to enjoy. Dogs are allowed here but they must be kept on a leash at all times. There are over five miles of trails crisscrossing through the park for you to enjoy.
