Wag! Walkers know Bakersfield
Bakersfield is a small townhome community in the northern part of Cape Canaveral, close to the industrial park on Astronaut Boulevard. This tiny neighborhood sits at the end of Ocean Garden Lane which connects to North Atlantic Avenue and is set back in the shade trees. Being at the end of the road creates a moderately tranquil place to live! The only thing disturbing the peace and quiet in the immediate vicinity is the industrial park to the west.
While there are only a few small businesses and restaurants this far north, if you head south to the West Cocoa Beach Causeway, you will find all the shopping you need! There are several big box stores, a Winn-Dixie supermarket, and a shopping center. For more than this, all you have to do is use the causeway to cross the river into Merritt Island where there is a mall and a Walmart Supercenter.
What is the terrain like in Bakersfield?
Being this far back on Ocean Garden Lane leaves you with virtually no traffic at your doorstep and not much more on the rest of the lane either. In addition, you have sidewalks to use! Once you get out of the lane, you will be walking along North Atlantic, which is a relatively busy highway running from the port down to the West Cocoa Beach Causeway. If your dog is not used to walking near this much traffic, you should get them used to it by walking along North Atlantic for increasingly longer distances.
Be sure you keep your dog on a short leash that lets you maintain better control them in the event they are startled. You can use the short walks to enter some of the nearby residential areas to extend your walks until your pup is used to the traffic. The flat terrain will make it easy to exercise and train a relatively young puppy.
How many greenways are there in Bakersfield?
In 2018, the City of Cape Canaveral passed an ordinance that opened most of the parks in the city to our canine friends. The only stipulation is that your dog stays on a leash and that you use the waste bags provided by the city to clean up any messes your dog leaves. The nearest parks are to the west on the Banana River, but there are several more in town for you and your dog to enjoy.
If you want to take your dog for long walks on the sandy dunes of the coast, you'll have to make your way to Cocoa Beach as dogs are not allowed on the beaches in Cape Canaveral. This actually works to your advantage as one of the public entrances to the coast can be found at the Cocoa Beach Public Dog Park. The dog park covers a vast area of shade trees and grass and is divided into separated areas for small and large dogs.
