Wag! Walkers know Long Point
Long Point is a small cul-de-sac neighborhood on Long Point Road. The community sits alongside Astronaut Boulevard, the main north-south road through town and the connector road leading to the cruise ship ports at the northern end of the Cape Canaveral peninsula. The houses here are a mix of single-family homes and duplexes. At the east end of the community is Patriots Park Cape Canaveral.
There are a few chain restaurants this far north on Astronaut Boulevard, but vast tracts of the land are dedicated to providing parking for the various cruise lines using the port and ancillary support service buildings. If you want things like a supermarket or superstore, there is a trip to the south in the cards for you. Your trip to the nearest Publix Supermarket will take less than ten minutes and, if you take the causeway to the west, you can be at the nearest Walmart Superstore over in Merritt Island.
What is the terrain like in Long Point?
One of the great things about living in a cul-de-sac community is the lack of heavy traffic, even during the usual rush hours. With so few homes, rush hours can actually be measured in minutes. Better yet, there is a sidewalk you and your dog can use for your walks that will keep you protected from what little traffic there is. The flat terrain is also a blessing, making it easy to get out and about.
However, Astronaut Boulevard is an entirely different story. Along with being the main north-south road through the city, it is frequently used by those heading to the ports for their cruises. You can count on bustling traffic until late into the night. While there are sidewalks along both sides of this highway, unless your dog is very used to this level of noise, you'll want to use a short leash any time you are walking your dog along this roadway.
How many greenways are there in Long Point?
At the west end of the community, there is a vast area of woods that ends at the Banana River. You and your dog may be able to hike back into here and enjoy a little shade on your walks. You can either drive to Manatee or Banana River Park or, if you are ambitious, you can walk to them. Both offer plenty of grass for the two of you to run about on, paved walking trails, and a spectacular view of the Banana River.
All city parks in Cape Canaveral are dog-friendly to help offset the fact the city does not allow dogs on the beach. However, if you insist on taking your dog out onto the sandy dunes of the coast, it's only a short drive down to Cocoa Beach where you will find most of the area open to dogs. The drive is well worth the effort as the two of you can walk for miles, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
