Wag! Walkers know HighlaPark
Highland Park is a small residential neighborhood running
along both sides of Highland Street between US-1 and the Indian River.
Most of the homes in the area are large, well-established houses and there is one apartment
building that sit on Forrest Avenue.
US-1 is one of the busiest
highways in town and brings with it a significant amount of traffic noise and air
pollution.
For your shopping convenience, there is a Walmart Supercenter,
a Publix Supermarket, and the Merritt Island Mall, all within a ten-minute
drive in various directions. If you prefer to shop for pet
supplies in a pet store, MYDOGSWAG is less than five minutes to the south on the corner
of Forrest Avenue and Center Street, or there is a Pet Supermarket over on Merritt Island.
There are also plenty of places to eat within driving distance, but less than a ten-minute
walk away is Papasan's Vietnamese Café. This restaurant is a local favorite and
serves up some spectacular food.
What is the terrain like in HighlaPark?
Highland Park is located in a bustling area of town and the
traffic on US-1 never seems to slow down during the day. Forrest Avenue also stays bustling during the day. Thankfully,
both halves of Highland Street have sidewalks for you and your dog to make good use
of.
In this neighborhood, you get to choose between walking on the sidewalk that
runs for miles in either direction or crossing the street to enjoy the grassy river bank on the other side. Although the cement sidewalk might make for a slightly
less challenging walk, it still comes in handy if the grass on the other side
is still soaked after a Florida downpour.
The grass, on the other hand, is typically a better choice
as it's far gentler on your dog's paws. Along with not being rough like cement, during the warmer months of the year, paved surfaces
can quickly reach temperatures that can easily cause burns and discomfort.
How many greenways are there in HighlaPark?
The nearest green space in Highland Park is the
riverbank. It offers you and your dog miles of walking along the Indian River where
you can watch the boats going by all year round. In some areas, there are plenty
of shade trees, while others are mostly grass, adding a little challenge to your
daily walks.
However, on the other side of US-1 is West Highland
Drive. This road leads directly to Bracco Park. In the park itself, there are three water retention ponds that feed fresh water to the city's wastewater
treatment plant. The park offers a walking trail that circles each of the three
and around the entire set. Along with the walking trails, there is plenty of
open space for you and your dog to play on. Just remember, all dogs must be on a
leash in city parks and you are required to clean up after them.
