Top dog walkers in Sunnyside
Wag! Walkers know Sunnyside
The neighborhood of Sunnyside straddles two major highways, US-1 and SR-520, that just happen to intersect in the middle of the community. Most of the property around the intersection is given over to businesses, however, there are residential areas to the south. These houses are well-established and, much like the family homes you find in many older towns, they have large yards with plenty of room for a dog to run around.
There are several businesses on all four corners of the intersection, but if you need essentials for everyone in your family, you'll have to drive south on US-1 to find the nearest Publix supermarket. The same applies to finding pet supply stores and places for you and your family to go out for a meal. If you take SR-520 for twenty minutes to the east, you will be on the Cape Canaveral beaches where your pup may not be allowed, but you can enjoy some time to yourself!
What is the terrain like in Sunnyside?
US-1 is the first highway built on the east coast that runs virtually all the way from top to bottom. The highway starts at Fort Kent, Maine and continues all the way south to its conclusion in Key West. As you can imagine, this is a very busy highway. Even though there are flat, easy-to-navigate sidewalks running on both sides of it, unless your dog is used to walking near heavy traffic, you might want to find another place to wander.
SR-520 is also a bustling thoroughfare as it is the main route to Cape Canaveral and the port from which millions of people take cruises every year. During the hours when people are heading to port or home after a cruise, traffic here can be a nightmare and very unsettling for even the most well-behaved dog. You can avoid dealing with the congestion by keeping your walks to the residential streets where traffic is much lighter.
How many greenways are there in Sunnyside?
Despite being at the intersection of two highways, there is a park nearby! The Joe Lee Smith Recreation Center is on the corner of Stone Street and Washington Avenue, one block south of West King Street. The center offers a public pool, basketball court, playground, and a vast area of grass where you and your dog can run around as long as there's no softball game going on.
If it's a dog park you want, you and your pooch can take a ride to Barks and Recreation on Pluckebaum Road over in the Rockledge neighborhood. Opened in 2014, this park features separate areas for small and large breeds. Each of the areas has a water fountain for the pups and tends to be very busy during the day. It's a great place to take your dog where they can run around off-leash and make new friends or catch up with old ones!
